Detailed description

Carnegie Abbey is an 18 hole private golf course located in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Centerpiece of The Carnegie Abbey Club near Newport is the waterfront golf course on Narragansett Bay.

Carnegie Abbey Golf Course opened in 2000. Donald Steel designed the course which in addition to a beautiful setting boasts traditional Scottish-style revetted sod bunkers. Although the bunkers are few in number, they are placed for maximum impact on play. The course layout takes full advantage of its seaside location, providing dramatic and ever-changing views of Narragansett Bay. In fact, it is a course that is married to the landscape, blending beautifully with mature woodlands, wetlands, and colonial stone walls. It seems to have been not so much built as cultivated.

Respectful of the environment and in the spirit of Scottish links, the Carnegie Abbey golf course is designed to be walked. Fairways and greens share the terrain with woodlands, wildflowers, quiet ponds, running brooks, and the shoreline. The unique 18th green and fairways are reached by playing across the beach and a small inlet, where the sea breeze summons the true spirit of links golf.

The course is not long by modern standards, but its five short holes and par of 71 make the 6,675-yard length deceptive. Combine this with the ever-present southwesterly breezes, the firm, fast-running greens, and the revetted-sod bunkers, and the course presents a stern test for even the most seasoned golfers, particularly from the back tees.

This is not a course that relies on narrow fairways and punitive roughs for its challenges; rather, it is one designed to reward thoughtful shot placement over driving power. It demands a style of play that is increasingly recognized as offering the greatest variety of shot making. The Carnegie Abbey golf course has proven equally delightful for accomplished professionals and earnest beginners alike.

The golfing facilities include a full-service multi-tee practice range and a dedicated short-game area, plus two additional driving ranges and a pair of putting greens.
