Shady Springs Golf Course, is a Public, 9 hole, par-3 golf course located in Greeneville, Tennessee.
The course first opened in 1974. Merrill Wells was the architect of the course.
Men and women share the same tee boxes.
The course plays to a 9-hole par of 27 and a 9 hole combined distance of 950 yards.
The course closed in 2000.
For 27 years, thousands of golfers played on these 15 acres making irreplaceable memories. Merrill Wells (his house still resides on #9) designed Shady Springs after working at Oak Ridge Country Club in the early 70’s, and he also helped to design Link Hills and Kinser Park Golf Course. Merrill left this world and Shady Springs to his nephews Drew and David Wells in 1981. Even though both of these men had other jobs (David- Fire Department) (Drew- Police Department and National Business Forms), they took on the task of maintaining the course ( a complicated process that involves expensive chemicals and maintaining delicate mowers) and managed to turn it into a destination for golfers from all over the region.
Aaron Bible wrote in a post, "I remember the excitement of arriving at the clubhouse, the single deep-well drink machine with the push-back tops, David and Drew always with huge smiles, and even though the course closed over 15 years ago, I remember every hole on the course. Every time I smell fresh-cut grass, my mind is instantly transported to my carefree days as a kid walking the nine at Shady Springs. My favorite hole was #7, which Drew told me was always called “rabbit hill.” I miss this course like I miss my simple youth, but I am thankful for these memories made with family and friends. I send a great amount of gratitude to David and Drew Wells who carried on Merrill’s vision and gave many fathers a chance to teach their children about life and the game of golf.
