Detailed description

Oglebay Resort, The Robert Trent Jones Course, also known as the Speidel Course is a Resort, is an 18 hole golf course located in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Oglebay Resort is a golfer's paradise with four golf courses including two championship courses. The highlight of this 1,500-acre complex, set near the Allegheny Plateau on the former summer estate of a wealthy industrialist, is the Speidel Course, a regulation eighteen hole design that can be very strenuous to walk.

The Robert Trent Jones Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1969.

The multiple tee placements allow the course to play from 7,000 yards (championship tees) to 5,515 yards (forward tees). This course was the home of the West Virginia LPGA Classic for eleven consecutive years. The narrow fairways are tree lined, and the greens are medium in size and speed. There are water hazards coming into play on seven holes, and the terrain is hilly. The signature hole on the Speidel Course is #13, a 192-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot over water.

_______________

In 1900, Cleveland industrialist Earl Oglebay purchased a stately mansion and surrounding 750 acres in West Virginia to serve as his country home. Upon his death, the philanthropist willed his spectacular country estate to the City of Wheeling for as long as they “shall operate it for public recreation.”

Today, Oglebay’s property, under the governance of the Wheeling Park Commission, has expanded to 1,750 bucolic acres including dramatic elevation changes, streams, and rolling hills. The family-friendly resort is an attractive year-round destination with myriad recreational activities and overnight accommodations.

Oglebay’s golf courses cater to all abilities, including two exceptional 18-hole championship layouts at The Speidel Golf Club designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Arnold Palmer. The Crispin – the resort’s 5,600-yard original course – is perfect for warm-up rounds, seniors, and beginners. Oglebay also offers two driving ranges and a family-friendly par-3 course.
