Detailed description

La Costa Resort & Spa is a Resort, 36 hole golf course facility located in Carlsbad, California. The facility has two championship golf courses. They are The La Costa Champions Golf Course and The La Costa South Golf Course.

Both courses are similar in design. The fairways are generous, but scattered with trees. The elevated greens putt true and are well bunkered (79 bunkers Champions Course / 84 bunkers South Course). Both courses have water hazards coming into play (9 water hazards Champions Course / 12 water hazards South Course). The terrain is flat and easy to walk; however, you must be accompanied by a caddie if you choose to walk.

The La Costa Golf Course first opened for play in 1964. The course was designed by Dick Wilson. Nine new holes were added in 1973 bringing the total to 27 holes. In 1989 a fourth nine was completed. Both the 1973 and 1989 nine hole additions were designed by Joe lee. The front nine on both The La Costa Champions Golf Course and The La Costa North Golf Course and The La Costa South Golf Course were from the original 1964 course Dick Wilson designed course. The back nine on The South Course is the Joe Lee 1973 nine hole addition. The back nine on The Champions Course is the Joe Lee 1989 nine hole addition.

The La Costa Champions Golf Course _______________

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 7,094 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,939 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 6, a par-5 that plays to 548 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 3, a par-3 that plays to 187 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 6, the 548 yard par-5 challenge is the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 16, a 189 yard par-3.

Played this course on a UnderPar coupon where two people can play all day for about $118 each. When I bought the UnderPar it was worded vaguely and it appeared we could play both the Champions and Legends course on the same day.

We found out later that they reserve one course per day for the members. This is great for members. For nonmembers, you have to repeat the same course if you wanted a replay. (I have now noticed the language is cleaned up on the UnderPar). It ended up being too crowded to repeat - so, oh well, only got in one round.

As for the course, the layout and the greens were great with quality bunkers. The fairways were decent but thin in places. Lots of lakes on the Champions course makes for a real challenging layout. However, it seemed that they had too many dogleg right holes with a lake at the corner.

As a resort course, I understand the higher rates but a more reasonable rate for locals would be nice. The staff was courteous and professional.

I have played La Costa seveal times over the years and was excited at the opportunity to play again. I would have been better off going down the road to Carlsbad Crossings. La Costa has lost it's luster. It looks like nobody cares about the condition. To call it a cow pasture would be putting down a cow pasture.

Course was a little dry due to water rationing in the San Diego area. But a great traditional layout. Could be really tough if rough was up. No wonder why the tour played there. Awesome.
