Detailed description

Calumet Country Club is a Private 18 hole golf course located in Homewood, Illinois.

The present-day course opened for play in 1922 and was designed by Donald Ross. Calumet Country Club's original Club Charter was signed in 1901. Calumet was initially located at 95th and Cottage Grove, the present day site of Chicago State University.

Growing industrialization of the area surrounding the Club led members to look for a new location. The land at the present site was purchased in 1917. Donald Ross, designed the present day Calumet Country Club golf course that opened for play in 1922.

In 1945, Calumet hosted the Chicago Victory Open, a PGA Tour event many pros considered the unofficial replacement of the U.S. Open which was stopped during World War II. The 1945 event held at Calumet was won by the legendary Byron Nelson, the 8th victory in his remarkable 11 consecutive win streak. As a result, Calumet Country Club is forever linked to this great champion and his amazing accomplishment.

Donald Ross's style and genius are shown in Calumet's ability to remain fun and challenging for all skill levels. Their small undulating greens and narrow tree-lined bent grass fairways add to the challenge the golf course presents. At par 71 and 6559 yards from the championship tees, amateurs and professionals alike feel that Calumet will offer an easy test. But with 5 extremely challenging par 3's, and one that could double for a par 4, (#14); many worthy opponents have found that beating old man par at this traditional layout can prove to be anything but easy.

Although modest on the scorecard, each 9 adds its unique challenges. The first five holes of the outward 9, require skillful course management; while the inward 9, introduce 5 holes with water hazards and forced carries.

With its right and left doglegging holes and strategically placed bunkers, water hazards and trees, Calumet offers a daily challenge for every level of player.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,559 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5,534 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 6, a par-5 that plays to 521 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 17, a par-3 that plays to 163 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 4, a 410 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Calumet Country Club is # 17, the 163 yard par-3.
