Honeywell Golf Course

Honeywell Golf Course is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Wabash, Indiana.

The course was designed by Arthur Hills.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6414 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5209 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 9, a par-5 that plays to 525 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 16, a par-3 that plays to 153 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 6, a 402 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 16, a 153 yard par-3.

The Honeywell Golf Course was established in 1980 as a cooperative effort between the Honeywell Foundation and the City of Wabash.

The original course belonged to the Wabash Country Club and was opened after World Ward I. The front nine was constructed on land that was part of the Honeywell estate. The club's nine-hole golf course north of Harrison Avenue and east of Wabash Street continued in operation until eary in the war.

In 1944, a group of Wabash civic leaders announced plans to establish a new country club and golf course on land not far from the present facilities. Mr. and Mrs. Honeywell then offered a large portion of their estate to the new club. The remainder of the estate eventually became Honeywell Gardens, an area of formal gardens, trees and flowering shrubs managed by Honeywell Foundation.

In 1975, the Honeywell Foundation commissioned Arthur Hills to design and construct a nine-hole course on the land occupied by the Honeywell Gardens. The Foundation eventually purchased the orgiinal golf course from the Country Club and, in 1980, combined the two courses into the 18-hole Honeywell Public Golf Course.

Though the two nines were built in two totally different eras, Arthur Hills did an admirable job of blending them together. The front nine is longer and more wide open than its back nine counter part, but it also has greens that are more undulating and well protected by bunkers. The back nine offers a more picturesque view as it winds its way through the old gardens and becomes a very challenging, short and tight layout. The back nine also features the only back to back par 3's in the state. The most challenging aspect of the Honeywell Golf course are the above average speed greens which have become a Honeywell trademark.

The Honeywell Golf Course has been host to a number of top state tournaments, inclubding the Indiana Open (1987 and 1998), the Indiana PGA Championship (1988), and the Indiana PGA Match Play Championship (1992). The course is the annual host for the Indiana qualifier for the National Junior Championship.

The Indinapolis Star has named the Honeywell Golf Course as one of Indiana's Top Ten public courses, and Golf Digest Magazine gives the course a 3 1/2 star ranking.
