Rogell Golf Course is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Detroit, Michigan.
Rogell Golf Course first opened for play in 1917.The course was designed by Donald Ross.
The course has a rich history having started as a result of the efforts of prominent members of Detroit’s Jewish community back in 1914. That group had the course built and initially named it the Phoenix Club. It later became the Redford Country Club, and was sold to the city of Detroit. It was renamed Rogell Golf Course after Detroit Tiger great Bill Rogell who after leaving baseball, became one of the Motor City’s most respected and beloved community leaders.
Rogell Golf Course has wide open fairways on the front nine and the beautiful Rouge River coming into play on several holes of the back nine. The course has Donald Ross's signature sloped greens. The golf course's fairways are rolling and the greens are fast. Sand bunkers are strategically placed throughout and water hazards come into play on a few holes.
Par for the course is 70. From the back tees the course plays to 6,075 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 4,985 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 9, a par-5 that plays to 527 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 5, a par-3 that plays to 108 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 4, a 433 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 15, a 155 yard par-3.
Greater Grace Temple bought the golf course from the city for $2.5 million in 2007 but closed it last May of 2013, saying the operation had never been profitable. The course is slated to become a cemetery.
