Detailed description

Lake Mohawk Golf Club is a Private 18 hole golf course located in Sparta, New Jersey.

The first nine holes opened on August 30, 1929. Architect Irving Sewall designed the course. Holes 1, 2 and 3 had been tilled farmland and were easy to prepare compared to the adjacent rocky forests where stumps had to be pulled and rock outcroppings blasted to open up the rugged site for the rest of the golf course.

The original 9 consisted of current Holes 1,2,3,and 9 on the north side of the driveway and 10, 15, 16, 17, and 18 on the south side. During the mid-1930’s four more holes were added, current numbers 11,12,13,and 14. In 1958, the final five holes were completed. Numbers 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 were carved out of the forest and rocky hills to finally make Lake Mohawk Golf Club a full eighteen holes. In 1984 the land on the entire side of the adjacent mountain ridge was purchased to protect against development and consequent loss of the natural beauty that is part of golf at Lake Mohawk Golf Club. This land now gives the Club some flexibility as golf course improvements are considered. Periodically, the Club would invite analysis of the course by the USGA and each time would make improvements based upon their recommendations. One generous member even paid to have the world renowned golf course architect, Pete Dye, do an evaluation. Sand traps were added, rocks and ledge in the fairways would be blasted away, tees moved back to lengthen the yardage and the old fashioned rock hard greens were softened.

Par for the course is 70. From the back tees the course plays to 6,280 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,467 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 11, a par-5 that plays to 528 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 14, a par-3 that plays to 148 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 1, a 452 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 14, a 148 yard par-3.
