Detailed description

Rockaway Hunting Club is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Cedarhurst, New York.

The Club dates to 1877 for the purpose of fox hunting and steeplechase racing. Golf arrived in 1900. The course was designed by Tom Bendelow. The course the course was expanded and redesigned in 1919 by Devereaux Emmet.  Since that time, the course has been remodeled by A. W. Tillinghast in 1933, Perry Maxwell in 1946, then by his son J. Press Maxwell in 1955, and was further remodeled by Brian Silva in 1985. The course is considered to be a Tillinghast design.

This club has a Scottish links-style course.  The terrain is very flat, but there is some fairway mounding that can cause uneven lies, and the rough is extremely high. The front nine plays straight out to the furthest point away from the clubhouse; the back nine returns to the clubhouse. The course offers views of Brosewere Bay and Reynolds Channel. As with many links course, the wind is often a major factor.

The par 4, 445-yard 9th hole is regarded as one of the 100 best golf holes in America.

Par for the course is 70. From the back tees, the course plays to 7105 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 12, a par-5 that plays to 563 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 16, a par-3 that plays to 138 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 4, the 445-yard par-4 challenge is the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Rockaway is # 16, the 138 yard par-3.
