Warwick Country Club is a private 18-hole golf course in Warick, Rhode Island. The course is located on picturesque Narragansett Bay and offers views of the west passage and East Greenwich Bay and both the Jamestown and Newport Bridges.
Warwick Country Club golf course first opened for play in 1926. The course was designed by Donald Ross. Initially a nine hole course, with plans for 18 drawn by Donald Ross, it wasn't until 1954 that the course was expanded to 18 holes. The "new" nine was designed by Geoffrey Cornish who took inspiration from Donald Ross' original plans.
There are very few locations in the golfing world that are more beautiful then the eighth green at Warwick Country Club except perhaps the ninth green at Warwick. Selected in 2001 by the United States Golf Association as one of "Golf's Greatest Holes", the par three ninth at Warwick Country Club is set on the shoreline of Narragansett Bay. With the clubhouse in the background it is always a Kodak moment.
The first nine holes opened in June 1926. The original plans were for eighteen holes but economic reality limited Warwick's golf dreams at the time. The members hired golf course architect Donald Ross to design the layout. They made sure he came up with a plan for all eighteen. Major steps were taken in 1940 to acquire 23 additional acres of land, which lead to the eventual completion of the second nine in the fall of 1954 by Geoff Cornish.
Deep in golfing tradition, Warwick Country Club hosted the 2002 Rhode Island Open and the 2003 Rhode Island Women's Amateur Championship. Warwick will test all of one's golfing skill. From the uphill 451 yard par-4 first to the 338 yard par 4 sixth each of Warwick's holes are unique not only to the eye but also in experience.
