Dunes West Golf Club is a Semi-Private 18 hole golf course located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
Dunes West Golf Club first opened for play in 1991. The course was designed by Arthur Hills.
Hurricane Hugo, the massive storm hit that hit the Carolina Coast in 1989 destroyed hundreds of Live Oaks and hardwoods on the Dunes West Golf Club property that was to be the golf course. The layout that was envisioned was instantly changed. Before the violent storm, the course was intended to have a North Carolina feel to it – tight, bending fairways framed by hardwood trees covered in Spanish Moss creating a tranquil Old South landscape.
When Dunes West finally opened in 1991, the trees were gone and the layout was wide open, and new views of the creek opened up from the fairways and greens. The course took on a linksy feel.
The opening holes, courtesy of Hugo and Arthur Hills, are wide open and inviting. The back nine is a bit tighter and requires golfers to demonstrate precision off the tee. The final stretch of holes, beginning with the par-5 15th and ending with the picturesque 18th, is Dunes West’s strong suit.
Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 6859 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5208 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 15, a par-5 that plays to 561 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 6, a par-3 that plays to 168 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 5, a 409-yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Dunes West Golf Club is # 12, a 173 yard par-3.
