Detailed description

Butterfield Trail Golf Course is a public 18-hole golf course located in El Paso, Texas, close to El Paso International Airport.

Butterfield Trail Golf Course opened for play in 2007. The course was designed by Thomas Fazio.

Butterfield Trail Golf Course is named for the Missouri-to-San Francisco trail used by the Butterfield Overland Mail Company from 1858 to 1861. Each hole on the course is named for a different Stagecoach stop on the 2,800-mile trail.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 7,307 yards. From the forward tees, the course plays to 5,053 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 6, a par-5 that plays to 600 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 10, a par-3 that plays to 170 yards from the back tees.

#18 is a classic risk/reward par-5 of 566 yards that buttonhooks to the right around a lake. The more you cut off the corner, the more reward, as well as the more risk. Now the only question you have to ask is, "do I feel lucky today?"

The course closed in 2020.

The El Paso, Texas club, which is owned by the El Paso International Airport, has received rating accolades but has never made money. The airport has subsidized golf course operations since 2008 to the tune of about $1 million annually.

On April 15, 2020, Butterfield Trail Golf Club officials confirmed that the course will not reopen even after the coronavirus pandemic course closing ends.
