Detailed description

Newport Country Club, is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Newport, Vermont.

Newport Country Club first opened for play in 1922. They started by taking over an existing 9-hole course, designed by Ralph Barton. The architectural firm of Howard Watson, of Lachute, Quebec, was hired to design an 18-hole layout in 1968. In 1970, Brad Caldwell of Shelburne modified the Watson design. The new plan not only added new holes but also reconstructed old ones to complement the new.

The clubhouse was built in 1923 with a veranda added to the west side in 1927 at a cost of $1,000. In the winter of 1930-31, the clubhouse was moved to its present site overlooking Lake Memphremagog toward Owl's Head and Canada. It took Alois Moeykens most of the winter to accomplish this feat with a team of horses and rollers.

This very scenic course offers wonderful vistas of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Even though the fairways are tree lined, they still afford generous landing areas. The greens are large, plus three tee boxes and a few greens are elevated. The signature hole is #18, a 481-yard, par 5, featuring a spectacular view overlooking the lake.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6,491 yards. From the foward tees the course plays to 5,274 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 9, a par-5 that plays to 506 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 13, a par-3 that plays to 152 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 7, a 416 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Newport Country Club is # 13, the 152 yard par-3.
