Rapidan Golf Club previously named Somerset Golf Club is a Semi-Private 18 hole golf course located in Locust Grove, Virginia.
Somerset Golf Club opened in 1997. The course was designed by Jerry Slack. Rick Robbins rennovated the course in 2003.
Trees line every hole on this narrow course, and water hazards come into play on ten holes. Precision is needed off the tee and a good short game is needed on the approach. The most photographed hole on this course is #8, a 149-yard, par 3, which plays into dense trees and over a marsh to the green.
Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6,832 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,195 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 18, a par-5 that plays to 542 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 11, a par-3 that plays to 134 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 18, a 542 yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Somerset Golf Club is # 8, a 149 yard par-3.
The course is located in Civil War battlefield country. There's a brick house on site that dates to 1831, which was used as a hospital during the war. The house is alleged to be haunted.
Somerset Golf Club closed in 2008. The course reopened as Rapidan Golf Club in August, 2013.
