The Independence Golf Club first opened for play in October 2001. The course was designed by Tom Fazio.
The Independence Golf Club boasts two Tom Fazio designed tracks: an eighteen hole Championship Course and a nine-hole Short Course. The Independence Golf Club is the only daily-fee public courses in Virginia designed by Tom Fazio. The Independence Golf Club is also home to the Virginia State Golf Association headquarters, a museum dedicated to the history of golfing in Virginia, and an extensive junior golf education facility.
Both the 18-hole Championship Course and the 9-hole short course are seamlessly blended into the local topography, and the holes include a mixture of flat and rolling fairways that tree-lined, yet wide enough to allow room to breathe. The greens are guarded by well placed bunkers, and water comes into play on several holes in the form of wetlands.
