Detailed description

Needles Eye Golf Club is a Private 9 hole golf course located in Monterey, Virginia. There are additional sets of tees that can be used when playing an eighteen hole round.

Needles Eye Golf Club first opened for play in 1982. The course was designed by John Hooke. This is a demanding course. The narrow fairways are tree lined, and the small greens are fast. Water hazards come into play on 2/3rds of the holes. Sand bunkers are located throughout the course.

Par for the course is 35. From the back tees the course plays to 2902 yards. The course rating is 33.8 and it has a slope rating of 120. From the forward tees the course measures 2413 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 9, a par-5 that plays to 510 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 4, a par-3 that plays to 150 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 5, a 390 yard par-4 challenge and the #2 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 4, a 150 yard par-3.

Highland County, one of Virginia's most sparsely populated, is mostly devoted to national forests and cattle grazing. Pastoral valleys are drained by two rivers called Bullpasture and Cowpasture. Monterey, the seat of Highland County, is nestled in the Allegheny Mountains. Highland County itself forms part of the border of the famed Shenandoah Valley.

Monterey is more than a quintessential small and uncomplicated American town. It is a way of life for 222 people - all friendly, some funny.

Make plans to visit Virginia's "Little Switzerland" in March for the renowned Highland Maple Festival. Enjoy the 'opening' of the trees, as taps are drilled into the local sugar maples; take a sugar camp tour; and watch as maple sugar is processed into maple syrup. You'll certainly want to save room for pancakes so you can try out that freshly made syrup!
