Detailed description

Maple Bluff Country Club is a Private 18 hole golf course located in Madison, Wisconsin.

Maple Bluff Country Club first opened in 1899. The course grew one hole at a time with the first nine completed in 1905.

It was common sight in those days to see members arrive by horse and buggy or by steamboat which would leave the university area several times a day and land near the property which is now the Village beach. A member recalled long ago that a 40 foot steamboat, called the “Putter,” was purchased by the club to run from the university boathouse at the foot of North Carroll Street to the pier near the club.

The club continued to grow and prosper, and in 1916 Maple Bluff was enlarged to a full fledged 18 hole course. In 1967, a road running through the coourse was closed and the layout of the course was changed. Holes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11 were relocated and several other greens entirely rebuilt.

Many changes and improvements have been made over the years but the basic layout of the course has remained unchanged since 1967. The course as we know it today was designed by Arthur Hills.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees the course plays to 6,403 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5.468 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 9, a par-5 that plays to 561 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 13, a par-3 that plays to 172 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 5, a 537 yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 14, a 495 yard par-5.
