Detailed description

Stone Ridge Golf Course is an 18-hole public course located in Prescott Valley, Arizona.

The course was designed by Randy Heckenkemper. The course first opened for play in June 2002.

Stone Ridge is a par 72 eighteen-hole, championship track. It plays to a distance of 7,052 yards from the longest tees.

Stone Ridge is noted for its dramatic elevation changes in excess of 350 feet and has been likened to a ride on a roller coaster “ winding through, around and among rock outcroppings, native grasses, and pines. The course sits at an elevation of 5,200-feet and the rolling fairways of this desert/mountain design are dramatically sculpted and lined with ponderosa and pinon pine, scrub oak, native grasses, and wildflowers. Boulder and rock formations and desert washes highlight the layout, and the large greens are well bunkered.

Despite StoneRidge's challenges, playability and fairness are ensured by multiple tee boxes, allowing the course to be enjoyed by golfers of all skill levels.

Day 15 - 100 days, 100 courses (Thursday, March 28, 2019)

My day at Stone Ridge was an odd one. The parking lot was virtually empty when I arrived. It turns out that the back 9 was closed for work and the greens had just been aerated and sanded so the regulars stayed away. The course was empty, so I made the best of it and just tried shots I normally wouldn't have. Because of mixing tees and playing the front 9 twice I can't record the score for my handicap but I was happy with how I played. Theoretically an 83. There were some challenging driving holes with small landing zones where you had to keep the driver in the bag. The good news was that by playing the front 9 twice I got to go back and replay holes after learning how they played which is not something that I have been able to do on this trip.

I did run into a gentleman that I will remember for a long time. Alfie was a native Londoner who has been here for 31 years. He still has he cockney accent and would laugh at virtually everything. I thought that I had met the original Alfie Doolittle.

Played a Saturday afternoon round and the first 13 holes were wide open and fast. Then we caught up with a number of 4somes and we took way too long to finish the last 5 holes. It appeared they had no marshalls to speed up play. However, everything else about this course was great including the layout, the greens, and the challenge. The course winds through canyons with lots of up and downs. I felt the width of the fairways was fair although you definitely could not leave the fairway as you would be in thick brush and taking a penalty. Nice greens and fun to play. I would recommend you go up one tee box as there are lots of forced carries. Bring some extra balls with you!

Challenging course with lots of elevation change. Can be wet during Monsoon season (July-August). Target Golf, rewards good shots and club selection and penalizes poor shots.

The course is hard but it was designed that way. Biggest problem, too many blind shots.

I like this course for the challenge of the layout. The first time I played the course I could not believe the layout. I think the more you play this course the better you should score. You know the landing areas better each time you play. The clubhouse/restaurant is a real bargain with lunch or breakfast included.
