Lester George grew up in a military family. His father, a member of the U.S. Air Force was stationed in Germany with his family at the time of Lester's birth.

Lester graduated from The University of Richmond (Virginia) in 1977. He served four years on active duty as an Army officer. He remained in the Army Reserves until retiring a Lieutenant Colonel in 2003. He earned a Master's Degree from the United States Army Command and General Staff College. His military career ran concurrently with his career as a golf course architect.

George studied with other golf course architects at Golf Services International learning all aspects of golf course design and construction. He attended the Harvard Design School, Golf Course Architecture in 1992, which launched his solo career, George Golf Design, Inc.

Lester George, has quite a versatile resume. In addition to his award-winning new course designs, has developed a niche in renovating and restoring classic golf courses designed by some of the most revered golden age architects. He has worked on everything from plains to steep, rocky terrain to brownfield and environmentally challenging sites, including a course under which thousands of unexploded bombs were discovered once excavation began - and he has become somewhat of a master at designing practice facilities that offer a realistic experience for golfers.
